Play therapy and shamanic work

There is a shortage of NHS therapy and support for children and young people. At the same time, more primary school age children are experiencing difficulties that previously would only have been seen at a later age. I believe this is because our lives have become more complex much younger, and this presents particular challenges to young children who have not yet had time to develop new coping skills.

Longer term psychological work is helpful where the issues are more enduring, deep or several difficulties arise simultaneously. As with adults, an important part of the work is negotiating the length of work and reviewing progress regularly.

Play therapy (age 5-11)

Regardless of age, an important aspect of any effort at change involves stepping out of our current way of looking at life and ourselves. For children this is done largely through play and imagination. I offer a typical range of materials for children to work with- art and craft materials, sand, figures, instruments, board games, costumes and objects from nature.

Shamanic work with children

Children naturally understand and relate to power animals and allies, they understand what power loss feels like; they appreciate the value of rituals for meaning and well being and; they understand the role of ancestors and deceased loved ones in our lives. Using their imagination, they are readily able to conceptualise different worlds, and this in turn makes it much easier for them to imagine a different story for themselves.

Finding power animals that can strengthen a child’s resources; working in nature to find guidance and meaning; and developing suitable rituals and ceremonies to aid development are aspects of shamanism that work well with children. As with all aspects of the work the details are described in full beforehand with adult and child, and consent is always obtained from the child and the parent/guardian.

Shamanic bird by Dana, age 6
This cute baby owl suggests softness and stoicism as it sits alone on a tree branch. In therapy and the tradition of shamanism, the capacity to be alone and still retain the qualities of gentleness and connection to the world, are difficult but important to cultivate.
